Gentle persons
Sir,—Janice Russell (January 23) read me too carelessly. I did not suggest “common” courtesy was the sole prerogative of the intelligentsia. I said the class of men most likely to open doors (and that is the middle class) produced the lawmakers and lawyers who passed and practised laws injurious to women. The intelligentsia, mostly middle class and having time, are most likely to be sensible about who opens doors. I have opened my doors to felons and found them pleasant, interesting and respectful of my rights. I have never even seen a harridan; I have seen many women battered, abused, confused, impoverished and hopeless. I share her abhorrence of uncaring daycare centres, but most children are very well cared for in good ones. Many children are neglected, brutalised, or twisted in their own homes; they benefit in good day-care centres, too.— Yours, etc., SUSAN TAYLOR. January 23, 1986.
