Chunky, but simple to use
A unit which has been available for a number of months now, the budgetrange Sharp VC-582 is still proving popular and is well worth another look. Finished in traditional silver and black, the 582 is not as slimline as other machines in the Sharp range, but the simplicity of layout and use compensates for the slightly
chunky appearance. Major mode controls and indicator lights are found in a panel slightly to the right of centre in the front, with the eight channel selector buttons alongside. A drop flap running along the bottom of the unit, activated by a push at the upper right comer, opens to reveal the clock/
timer controls, TV/video select, dualtracking controls for still and normal playback, picture tone control, aux/tuner select and the AFT on/off. The 582 has a mechanical counter which de-
tracts slightly from looks, but the reset button is conveniently located alongside and the arrangement works well. The wired remote control has a good length of cable (more than five metres), is well laid out, and covers nine basic functions. The response to
commands is quick and quiet, but the remote control does not include on/ off.
We found the 582 very easy to set up and use and the convenience of the automatic functions in playback, blank section scan and rewind make it a breeze. The audio and picture quality are good for a unit in this range and the still frame holds well.
A pleasing, uncomplicated unit, the Sharp VC • 582 has a recommended retail of $999.
