Old, but not to be overlooked
DON’T LOOK NOW Donald Sutherland, Julie Christie Thorn EMI 106 min M 1973 When a couple lose their only child through accidental drowning, they move to Venice, but a chance meeting with a medium changes their lives completely, x Adapted from a short story by Daphne du Maurier, this very stylish thriller has a haunting and memorable quality due partly to the superb photography but also to great acting and direction. The imagery and theme of “nothing is what it seems” linger long after the movie has ended and the thinking viewer will find the story provoking.
Not a movie for casual viewing, this one will reward the thriller fan who is looking for depth along with a tantalising
story. The quality throughout is very good.
SHOOT THE MOON Albert Finney, Diane Keaton, Karen Allen C.E.L. 124 min R 1982 The breakdown of a marriage and the effects on those most vitally concerned is a subject which has received more than its share of attention from movie makers for some time, but this drama is a little different.
Whilst Albert Finney, as the husband, tends to alienate the viewer by his behaviour and insensitivity, the children are refreshingly realistic and Diane Keaton’s portrayal of the wronged wife is extremely good. The director, Alan Parker, gives us as many points of view as possible while maintaining the over-all theme and raises each issue to a thought provoking degree.
A better than average look at the complexities of marriage and relationships in general, well crafted and convincing. The quality throughout is very good. •
