Wartime escapes relived
“Missing Hero,” a documentary about the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who helped an estimated 100,000 Jews escape the Nazis during World War 11, is repeated on One this evening at 8.35.
For many years, Wallenberg’s efforts on behalf of the Jewish people had been allowed to be forgotten. Wallenberg “disappeared” in 1945 when he made contact with Soviet troops as they reached Budapest.
While the Soviets insist he died of a heart attack in 1947, numerous witnesses have testified to having seen him in various prisons up until recently.
This documentary reconstructs Wallenberg’s escapades and recounts the efforts made over the years to find him. Next Tuesday at 8.25 p.m. on Two, a miniseries, “Wallenberg — A Hero’s Story” begins, starring Richard Chamberlain in the title role.
