Bombay renamed

Bombay has changed its name to Mumbai. The move dubs the city of 8.5 million by its name in Marathi, the language spoken by about a third of its inhabitants. — Bombay. Avalanche kills An avalanche of snow crushed 11 houses in the mountain village of Nomachi, killing 13 people. The death toll was the worst from an avalanche in Japan since 1954. — Tokyo. Troops and paramilitary police watched trouble spots in north India yesterday as worsening communal and territorial feuds threatened to boil over.
