Body of climber identified
PA Invercargill The body of a climber found by searchers on Mount Tutoko, in Fiordland, on Friday has been identified. He was Paul Ross Gerrard Moloney, aged 25, of Auckland.
The search for his companion, Peter Robert Whitehead, aged 22, also of Auckland, was abandoned on Saturday after three days intensive search.
The pair had been missing since January 21, when they failed to return after attempting to climb Mount Tutoko.
The police believe the accident in which Mr Moloney died happened about a week and a half ago and there was little chance of finding the second climber alive.
The body of Mr Moloney was found about 240 metres off the mountain’s south-east ridge.
