Filter covers pass tests

Tests on new trickle filter covers at the Bromley sewage treatment works have been most successful, says the manufacturer, Mr Graeme McCaw. The Christchurch Drainage Board commissioned the covers to try to stop the strong odour from the works. Mr McCaw, of Graeme

McCaw, Ltd, a fibreglass manufacturer, said eight of the 70 fibreglass panels needed to make the covers had been tested for strength against wind and snow. Twenty-eight 200-litre drums filled with water were hung beneath a temporary structure to simulate a wind and snow load, al-though“no-one has seen

snow in Bromley,” he said.

The structure had withstood twice its expected load and had also passed an “out-of-balance” test. The firm had made 18 of the required 70 panels so far, said Mr McCaw. The covers, which are 57m across, will be installed in August.
