Blovinski repeats Reefton success
By ALEX McMILLAN Last week’s Reefton Cup winner, Blovinski, after being given a splendid trailing run by his regular rider, Grant Davison, carried on his winning way in the Scenicland Businessmen’s 10,000, the feature event at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting at Omoto yesterday. Victory seemed, however, far from certain near the home turn when the four-year-old appeared to encounter some tightening, a situation that Davison confirmed after the race.
“He had a lovely run and I hoped to go through them in the straight. But a couple went around and things got a little tight. It took a while to get him wound up again,” said Davison.
Blovinski triumphed by a neck over Adios King, handy throughout, with Blyme a close-up third ahead of Gay King.
Royal Adder, Blovinski’s best backed rival in yesterday’s 2000 m event, was
“outpaced all the way” according to her rider, Chris Johnson, while the pacemaker, Vrinsk, repeated his inglorious Kumara performance of last Saturday, stopE quickly when chal_ed. He ended up a wellbeaten seventh. Blovinski will make his next appearance in the $B7OO D. B. Greymouth Cup next Tuesday, in which he has been allotted 54kg. Yesterday’s win was his sixth for his owner, Mrs Greta Lalor, the wife of the gelding’s Riccarton trainer, Tom Lalor, formerly of Greymouth. Blovinski’s win completed the T.A.B. treble yesterday for Riccarton stables, with Samuelle and Grand Eloquence having won the opening two legs. Samuelle, a March Legend four-year-old prepared by Bill Beck, confirmed the worth of a very impressive win at Reefton last week when he scored a four length win in the Brown Walters Toyota Improvers,
leading throughout to beat Miss Isabel and Slick Million.
Grand Eloquence, an easy winner in heavy ground at Hokitika on Monday, continued the successful run of her trainer, Helen Preston, with a four and a half length win in the Nelson Moving Company Three-Year-Old event. Her time for the 1500 m on a firm track was a very respectable Imin 31.85.
Catential scored his third win in succession and fourth from his last five starts when he completely outclassed his opponents in the Scenic Businessmen’s Consolation over 2000 m.
The Peter and Dawn Williams-trained Catus four-year-old was settled back in the early running by Chris Johnson but had improved to be in a challenging position before the home turn and his resolute finishing burst proved too much for the top weight, Bo Diddley, and Campala.
