AUSTRALIA Gold sets record trade

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets surged to a record close following a major rise in gold prices in London and New York overnight and increased take-over activity, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 10.4 points to 1060.9, compared with its previous record close of 1052.2 recorded on October 25 last year. The all industrials had added 6.3 points to a record 1555.4, the all resources index 12.9 points to 678.4 and the gold index 51.6 points to 1000.4. Turnover was 76.2 M shares worth $138.8M, with rises outnumbering falls by 342 to 122. The highlight of the day’s trading was the announcement of lEL’s planned partial takeover of North Broken Hill. NBH’s share price jumped 22c to 270 on a turnover of about 2.8 M shares, while lEL fell to 720 in early trading before recovering and closing 18c up at 748. A series of special sales in BHP near the close also boosted trading, with Potts West Specialling three million at 900 and a further million shares being crossed. BHP finished 6c up at 900.
