Tourist stole from other tourists

PA Invercargill A Japanese tourist, whose belongings were stolen in Brisbane, was convicted in the District Court at Invercargill yesterday on two charges of stealing from other tourists.

Chikaka Mori, aged 35, a coffee shop assistant from Kyoto, pleaded guilty to stealing a $350 camera from a Malaysian tourist at the Mount Cook Youth Hostel on January 5. She also admitted stealing a $250 camera and a bag with cash and personal items from an English tourist storing at a youth hostel

in Te Anau four days later. Both cameras were found when the second victim searched Mori’s pack on January 11, Sergeant Cruickshank told Judge Reid. The bag was later found

sodden at the edge of Lake Te Anau. Mori, who pleaded guilty, was fined $lOO on each charge and ordered to pay $49.20 reparation. Counsel, Mrs T. E. McKenzie, said the defendant was upset by the incidents. She was to fly home from Auckland on January 26. $
