Off on a charity drive ...
This small orange van will be the home of a Christchurch man, Mr Raymond Robbie, for the next few months as he travels round New Zealand raising money for the Crippled Children Society. He will play music on an organ in as many towns as he can to raise the money. “I don’t know quite how much I’ll raise, but I would guess the minimum will be about $20,000,” he asid. “That’s based on what people give in Christchurch when I play in the Square.” Mr Robbie expects a 5 a.m. start each day, as he has to get permission from shop owners and local councils before he can start playing.
“I don’t think it will be a scenic trip, but I’ve always loved a challenge,” said Mr
Robbie, aged 71, who has raised money for many groups over the years by playing the organ in Cathedral Square. He will leave today for the North Island. His South Island tour will start in June.
The Railways Corporation had supported his trip by paying the ferry fare across Cook Strait and Shell Oil New Zealand, Ltd, was supplying petrol vouchers, he said. /
