Nurses reject blame for rise
PA Wellington The Nurses’ Union says the recent pay rise for nurses should not be blamed for increases in private hospital fees. Fees at Wellington’s two main private hospitals, Calvary and Bowen, have risen between 15 per cent and 20 per cent. The union’s industrial officer, Mr Neville Taylor, said the profitability of private hospitals should not
depend on low wage rates for nurses. “They should have budgeted for a reasonable increase for their workers,” he said. Some private hospitals put fees up at various stages during the last year but nurses got no increases at those times. “Only a relatively small portion of the total increase in fees is being paid out in wages,” he said.
