U.S. and Libya
Sir,—The United States has requested that New Zealand follow its lead in enforcing trade sanctions on Libya at a very strategic time. It seems the United States is asking us to prove that New Zealand is stil&an ally. Surely New Zealand has already proved its
wish for a friendly relationship by sending troops to the Korean and Vietnam wars. Both of these wars were American affairs which had nothing to do with New Zealand until help was requested from us. Admittedly the A.N.Z.U.S. row has produced some doubts as to where both countries stand, but asking New Zealand to harm its export trade of meat and dairy products to Libya and also to Iran (“The Press” January 13) to reaffirm a shaky relationship is an aggressive way of going about this. I would like to know when the United States is going to show its friendly intentions by assisting New Zealand in a similar manner instead of only requesting assistance from us.—Yours, etc., LESLEY CALLANDER. January 14, 1986.
