Gentle persons
Sir, — Naomi Roberts’ sexist views offend me. To suggest that opening doors for my wife, and similar courtesies to her are “upper class veneer” is, to me, an indicator of Ms Roberts’ thinking. — Yours, etc., LLOYD HABGOOD. January 15, 1986.
Sir, — It was with some relief I read Paddy Austin’s refutation of K. Talbot’s letter. I, too, cringe at women being arbitrarily given the role of “moderators” of' male excesses. Of course it then follows that if men succumb to their baser urges, it is not the men themselves that are to blame but the “moderators’ who have been neglecting their duties. From early days of New Zealand history this double standard has been alive and kicking. Now women, tired of being victims, tired of being blamed for male problems, are trying to point to other more equitable and humane ways of living. — Yours, etc JILL WILCOX. January 18, 1986.
