Wood foundations
Sir,—On January 9an article by A. J. Hand purported to explain to home owners how to build a house foundation- completely of timber. While it is agreed that the Building Research Association of New Zea-, land has commissioned studies on this form of construction, and has produced a preliminary report “Treated Timber Frame Foundations,” the article does not emphasise that this method of construction has never had the formal approval of the Standards Association of New Zealand — the body charged with the responsibility of defining minimum standards for building construction. The buildings division has received several telephone calls since the article was . published and all have been told that-many of the details in the article are not good trade practice, and that the support of an organisation such as B.R.A.N.Z. would be necessary before the City Council would approve this type of construction.—Yours, etc., M. BLUCK, for City Engineer. January 13, 1986.
