Beware: this plant is a menace

At this time of the year Clematis vitalba, or “Old Man’s Beard,” becomes extremely conspicuous because of its seed vessels, which almost smother the plant in much the same way as it smothers the plants on which it twines. The seed vessels are long and plume-like, initially green, changing to greywhite, tufted balls. Attention has previously been drawn to this dense, rampant, growing climber which has spread far and wide. It causes most concern where it has got into native bush. This garden escapee should in no way be encouraged. Specimens in the garden should be fully removed and destroyed. Its dispersion, predominately through liberal seed production, must be countered. Where sightings are made, and cannot be dealt with, the location should be reported to local district authorities. The Royal Forest and Bird Society is recording locations of these plants, and could also be informed.
