Girl talked out of jump
PA Wellington A police negotiator worked for almost an hour to stop a girl, aged 13, from jumping from the ton of a seven-floor central Wellington building. The negotiator, trained for hostage or armed offender situations, worked with an adult friend of the girl to persuade her to step back from the ledge just before midnight on Tuesday. The girl had been placed in Social Welfare Department care, police said. Traffic was diverted from the Taranaki Street-Wake-field Street intersection area from about 10.40 p.m., after the girl climbed on to a ledge on the Wakefield Chambers building, and threatened to jump if police went near.
Minutes earlier she had run across the road from the Taranaki Street police station, where she was being interviewed by officers.
