Civilian president sworn in
NZPA-AP Guatemala City Vinicio Cerezo was sworn in yesterday as Guatemala’s first civilian president in 16 years and now faces the task of pulling the country out of one of the darkest times in its history. The Chief of State, Briga-dier-General Oscar Humberto Mejia Victores, gave the oath of office to the genial lawyer, aged 43, of
the centrist Christian Democratic Party in a ceremony at the national theatre. Cerezo goes into office backed by his party’s 51seat majority in the 100member congress for a fiveyear term. The changeover ends nearly four years of military rule by decree that began with a coup on March 23, 1982, that brought General Efrain Rios Montt to
power. Mejia Victores replaced him on August 8, 1983, in another coup. Cerezo must balance the interests of workers, who were jolted in past years by inflation of 50 per cent and estimated by some economists to be as high as 100 per cent, against those of a powerful private sector that has steadfastly resisted higher taxes or other steps,,, that their interests.
