Sydenham Pride Week
Sydenham residents have decided to dispel some of the misconceptions that some Christchurch citizens may have about the area. The Sydenham Community Association and Neighbourhood Committee has organised a Sydenham Pride Week from February 2 to 8.
“We felt that Sydenham was often being put down in one way or other and we would like to make Sydenham residents and others
more aware of what the area has to offer,” said the committee’s secretary, Miss Kathy Smith.
The area had several interesting historic buildings such as Nazareth House, the old post office on the corner of Brougham Street and Colombo Street, and several “quaint” homes. The week’s highlights will include a picnic fair day in Bradford Park on Thursday, February 6, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and a street
parade on Saturday, February 8. The parade of local service groups, sports clubs and local businesses will leave the South Mall at 10 a.m. and proceed down Colombo Street to Cass Street.
During the week, the Historic Places Trust will show four videos on the area’s history in the South Mall. On Monday, residents will be encouraged to tidy up Buchan Reserve.
