Laundry workers to meet in Chch

Commercial laundry workers from dry-cleaning firms and private hospitals will meet in Christchurch this morning to discuss the breakdown in their award talks. When the talks were adjourned yesterday afternoon a big gap remained between the union’s claims and the employers’ offer. The union seeks a $2O industry allowance in addition to wage increases. It is also claiming clothing and

footwear allowances, and a 10-minute rest break every hour when the temperature exceeds 35deg. The employers have offered $33 a week, with a maximum increase of 15.5 per cent for the top rate. They have rejected the industry allowance, and refused to respond to other claims until the allowance claim is withdrawn.

More than 400 people are covered by the laundry workers’ award in Canterbury, Westland, Otago and Southland. An advocate for the union, Mr Barry Brown, said that 97 per cent of the workers—most of whom are women—take home between $146 and $l5O a week.
