Mr George Julius (Peter) Armstrong, a former divisional superintendant in the Order of St John, died recently in Christchurch. Mr Armstrong’s 50-year involvement with the St John Ambulance Brigade began in 1930, when he joined the Christchurch Ambulance Division. He rose through the ranks to become divisional superintendant in 1952, and was five years later appointed a staff officer on the Mid-
Canterbury Sub-District staff. For much of his career Mr Armstrong was involved with young people. He was appointed officer-in-charge of cadet training in Christchurch in 1958, and in the mid-1970s he started a cadet division at Marylands Special School. Mr Armstrong was admitted to the Order of St John as a serving brother in 1957, and was promoted to the grade of officer in 1976.
