Airport radar struck by lightning
A lightning strike on Tuesday night put some radar and auxiliary equipment at Christchurch Airport out of order for about 14 hours.
Until the equipment was repaired back-up non-direc-tional beacons were used, said the airport’s senior air traffic services officer, Mr John Gregory, yesterday. “The lightning damage may have caused some minor delays to flights which is routine after any damage to radar equipment,” he said.
The primary nagivational aids damaged included equipment that enables an aircraft to track accurately between two stations, and auxiliary duplicate radios were also damaged, said Mr Gregory.
