Man charged in hostage case
PA Palmerston North A 20-year-old labourer was remanded to Lake Alice Hospital yesterday when he appeared in the District Court at Palmerston North on charges arising from a 20-hour hostage incident on Tuesday. No pleas were taken when John Howard Barnes appeared before Judge Toomey charged with unlawfully detaining a young woman and unlawfully presenting a .303 rifle at a man.
Remanding Barnes in custody to January 29 for
medical and psychiatric reports, the Judge ordered that the names of both complainants be suppressed, on an application from the police prosecutor, Sergeant Peter Keegan. Counsel for Barnes, Mrs Pam Harvey, applied for the defendant to be held in a psychiatric hospital. She said he had expressed a wish to be detained in such a hospital as he had fears for his safety if held elsewhere while on remand. On a further application, the defendant was granted legal aid.
