Waikato Yearling Sale tops $10M mark

PA Hamilton A total of $10,660,500 was spent over the three days of Wrightson Bloodstock’s twentieth annual Waikato Yearling Sale, held at the Claudelands Showgrounds, Hamilton, this week. The aggregate was 10.6 per cent up on last year’s $9,063,250, with the average price up almost $3OOO. In all 606 lots, of 744 offered, sold for an average of $17,591. Eighty-two lots were withdrawn.

Yesterday’s third and final session saw solid selling, 200 lots, of 255 through the ring, realising $3,651,000, at an average $18,255. Although the sale record, the $125,000 paid last year for a Star Way colt, remained intact, selling over the three days was steady with few low prices accepted. Top price yesterday was $BO,OOO, paid late in the day by the Singapore trainer, Ivan Allan, for a brown colt by Vice Regal from the Melbourne winner, Gold Seine (by Gold Sovereign, dam—sire of 24 stakes winners).

He outbid several rivals to secure the strongly made Vice Regal colt, offered on account of Chequers Stud, Cambridge, Vice Regal’s base since his racetrack retirement in 1979. The colt’s distaff line has not produced a stakes winner for some five generations, though his fourth dam, the Paper Money mare, Desirable, is a halfsister to the dams of Super Vaals (10 wins) and Jaganda. Allan led the buying yesterday, paying an average $38,400 for five lots.

Second top price yesterday was the $75,000 paid by Mr D. B. Meban, of Te Puke, for the chestnut colt by Ring the Bell from the Crest of the Wave mare, Crystal Glow.

Offered on account of the Mapperley Stud, Matamata, the colt is from the second crop of the fine galloper, which counted the New Zealand Derby and the Canterbury Guineas among his 10¥4 wins.

The colt’s dam, unraced, descends from Eulogy through the unbeaten champion two-year-old Subdued. A Sydney owner Les Bridge went to $65,000 to secure an attractive chestnut colt by Kingdom Bay’s sire Otehi Bay from Golden Donna (by Alcide’s son Donalbain).

A bay brother to Peter Pan and Gloaming Stakes placegetter, The Cowboy (Balmerino-Empress Lu, by Great Wall), and a chestnut filly by Biscay’s good sprinting son, Übetido, from an imported Manado half-sister to Eastern Joy (A.R.C. Easter Handicap) and Josette Nicolle (W.R.C. Desert Gold Stakes), shared next top price of $50,000. The highest passing of the day was the $60,000 refused by Ra Ora Stud, Auckland, for a brown Vice Regal colt from the Faux Tirage (damsire 51 stakes winners) mare, Cute Nymph. Similarly, $40,000 was not enough to secure a chestnut half-sister, by a new sire, Parkdale (by Swing Easy), to the unbeaten two-year-old, Auto Air.
