Flight retraced
PA Palmerston North A veteran airliner will take off from Palmerston North airport in a staged repeat of an episode in commercial aviation history today. Fifty years to the day, the 43-year-old de Havilland Dominie will re-trace the route flown on the first main trunk passenger service. Following the Union Airways de Havilland Express flight on January 16, 1936, the plane will fly from Palmerston North through Woodbourne, near Blenheim, then to Wigram and Taieri, near Dunedin.
Total flight time for the Express was about four hours, but the smaller Dominie will take more than five hours to complete the journey, flying at an estimated ground speed of about 85 knots.
