Shipping news Milestone for ship

The vessel which plies the Chathams run will reach an important milestone on Saturday — she will set out on her 250th voyage. The 911-ton Holmdale will also be making her first voyage of the year to the Chathams. Timber, foodstuffs, fertiliser, and the usual supply of liquid refreshments for the islanders are now being loaded on the vessel at Lyttelton. The Holmdale is owned by the Union Steam Ship Company and sails to the Chathams under contract to the Internal Affairs Department. She will turn 25 years old this year, quite an age for a cargo vessel, but has served her owner well on the sometimes hazardous Chathams run. At times, the vessel has been called on to make trips to Rarotonga, and she also used to carry supplies to Government weather stations in the Kermadec Islands. It could not be confirmed yesterday whether a celebration is planned for the Holmdale’s 250th voyage, although a watersider carrying a big cake was seen boarding the vessel.
