Lotto ‘could answer prayers’

PA Wellington Lotto could help relieve a crisis in arts funding and answer artists’ prayers, the Wellington actress, Davina Whitehouse, has said.

Most arts funding comes from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council which received 53.5 million from the Lotteries Board for the 1985-86 year.

“But even at this level there is a crisis in arts funding,” she said. "There has been quite a surge in the Government’s grant to the council this year, but even so we are merely treading water.

“From what I’ve read about the Lotto concept, it’s got to be good for the arts. I believe Lotto may prove the answer to a lot of prayers.”

The Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council’s director, Mr Michael Volkerling, said the council did not specifically support Lotto, but it supported investigating means of increasing Lottery Board funds.

He said the arts did not have enough resources. The council obtained revenue, from two sources — taxation revenue voted to the arts, and the Lotteries Board.
