Overfat, light lamb yarding lowers prices

Limited buying power and a big yarding of overfat and light lambs forced down prime lamb prices at the Addington market yesterday. Lambs were up to $2 a head cheaper than prices at last week’s sale, and overfat lambs were heavily discounted. The beef market also eased, a result of a big yarding of over 500 cattle of mixed quality. Prime lambs A limited number of buyers was unable to handle a big yarding of light lambs and prices declined $1.50 to $2 a head. As well, overfat ewe lambs were virtually unwanted, and prices were discounted by $4 to $5 a head. Many light lambs barely reached schedule prices, and several pens sold for considerably less. However, farmer interest in good-sized ram lambs suitable for growing on to heavyweights, was steady, and they fetched a premium of about $3 over ewe lambs. Good, heavy lambs generally made $2l to $24, but the bulk of the yarding sold at $l6 to $2O, with very light lambs down to $l3. The yarding was 1355 compared with 1545 last week. Values were:— Heavy lambs, to $25. Medium lambs, $l6 to $l9. Light lambs, $l3 to $l6. Sales included:— Hannah Brothers (Ahaura), 62 at $l4 to $21.80; D. J. Demand from butchers remained steady, particularly for good cutting ewes. Good ewes regularly reached $9.40, with heavierfleeced ewes making to $l2. Once again, few ewes sold for less than $6.40. Although few hoggets were offered, buying interest was limited. Best medium quality hoggets sold to $2l. The yarding of prime sheep was 1407, compared -to 1074 last week. Values were:— Best old ewes, to $lO, with woolly ewes to $l2. Medium old ewes, $7.60 to $8.40. Light old ewes, $6 to $7.40. Best hoggets, to $2l. Light to medium hoggets, $l7 to $19.80. Prime cattle Because of a huge yarding 540 catttle, the beef market was unable to sustain last week’s improvement and prices eased, particularly for cattle not properly finished. The yarding was the biggest since January, 1985, and almost double last week’s total of 277. The over all quality of beef cattle was inferior to last week’s, and this contributed to the general easing. Prices for choice quality steers and heifers showed only a minor change, and over-done heifers were penalised most. The top price was $9OO for a Shorthorn steer sold by R. P. Gibson, Amberley. Three heifers from B. .R. Chamberlain, Ellesmere, made $614 and a Simmental cow from O. J. Osborne, Doyleston, sold at $706. Prime pigs ■ Quality was mixed in a medium-sized yarding of prime pigs. Best quality pork and bacon pigs again sold well, particularly heavy pigs. Overfat pigs were difficult to quit Many overfat baconers made about $lOO and some overfat porkers were unwanted. A big yarding of choppers had a reasonable sale and values showed little ’ change from last week’s market. Values were:— Light pork $7O to $B2. Medium to heavy pork, $B5 to $lOO. Light to medium bacon, $lO5 to $l2O. Heavy bacon, to $136. Light choppers, $7O to $9O. Heavy choppers, $llO to $l3O. Store pigs Store pigs had a much better sale than last week’s. All types of pigs were in steady demand from a local buying gallery and prices were $5 to $7 dearer. Best stores consistently sold for more than $6O and best weaners made $33 to $3B. Breeding stock had a difficult sale and a sow and litter of 11 made $240. Values were:— Small weaners, $2O to $25. Good weaners, $27 to $35. Slips and small stores, $3B to $5O. Large stores, $6O to $67. Unfinished pork, to $79.
