Rockefeller told to leave
NZPA-Reuter Buenos Aires Violent disturbances broke out in Buenos Aires yesterday as the police clashed with Left-wing protesters demonstrating against a visit by a United States banker, David Rockefeller.
Eyewitnesses said demonstrators set fire to a car and wrecked several others as a 1500-strong march turned into a pitched battle. “Get out of Argentina, Rockefeller,” said a slogan
painted on a national monument.
Mr Rockefeller was presiding over a two-day meeting of the United Statesbased private group, the Americas Society. The society studied strategies for growth in debt-ridden Latin America. He was at the American Club in the centre of Buenos Aires when demonstrators started pelting a police cordon around the building with eggs and rocks. TheJpolice responded with
teargas and water cannon when their reinforcements arrived, the witnesses said.
The clashes capped a series of protests against Mr Rockefeller, who was called “a-bloodsucker” by President Raul: Alfonsin’s adviser on peace and detente, Aldo Tessio. ; He was quoted by Telam as saying that Mr Rockefeller would not help Latin America solve the problem of its nearly SUS37O billion ($728.9 billion) foreign debt, but “exactly the opposite.”, -•
