Volcano experts to visit
The International Volcanological Congress will be held in New Zealand in early February to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Mount. Tarawera eruption. About 450 scientists will visit Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua to study areas of volcanic interest. A group of scientists is expected to travel to Banks Peninsula after the confer-
ence to study volcanic forms. The Mount Tarawera eruption killed 153 people in the Rotorua area on June 10 and violent shocks could be felt in Christchurch. Scientists attending the conference will discuss methods of predicting such large-scale eruptions and the hazards and benefits of volcanic activity.
