Long sea swim
PA Invercargill The Riverton volunteer lifeboat came to the aid of a small boat and three crew in heavy seas yesterday after a man had swum for about an hour to call help. The 5 metre aluminium boat, owned by Mr Mat Kahoura, a Riverton fisherman, ran out of petrol near the Riverton bar. Also on board were Mr Kahoura’s sons, Mac and Ray, and his cousin, Mr Russell Kahoura. Mr Mac Kahoura decided to swim for help as the two-
metre seas and 35 knot winds were dragging the boat towards the Waimutuku River mouth, in spite of a sea anchor. He was in the water about an hour before he reached shore and raised the alarm at a coastal farm house. The Riverton police said he was in a distressed and shocked condition. Two men were in the water hanging on to the bow of the boat to keep the bow into the waves and the other was on board when the rescue boat found them.
