Labourers to discuss shifts
PA Wellington Award talks for builders’ labourers have been postponed to allow the Labourers’ Union time to discuss a suggestion on introducing shift work to the construction industry. The renegotiation of the award has been stalled over an employers’ move to introduce shift work. However, at talks yesterday, the employers’ suggestion was altered and the
•Labourers’ Union asked for time to consider it. The Employers’ advocate, Mr John Button, said that in the past the union had refused to consider shift work. Now it was seeking a mandate from its members to discuss the issue. The Labourers’ Union’s regional secretary, Mr Steve O’Reilly, said yesterday the union needed to talk with its members and other unions iri the construction industry before any decision could be made.
