Call off voyage —newspaper
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Greenpeace voyage to Antarctica should probably be called off, the “Sydney Morning Herald” said in an editorial yesterday. “Without gainsaying the courage, curiosity and idealism of individuals and groups who wish to raise expeditions, there is little doubt that private expeditions are inappropriate to such a dangerous area,” the “Herald” said. The paper also noted the
push by other countries, led by Malaysia, for an end to the 26-year-old Antarctic Treaty and for a replacement “common heritage” approach. “Our scientific expenditure hardly justifies our claim to 42 per cent of the frozen continent and, as the debate sharpens over who ‘owns’ Antarctica and why, Australia’s historical claims and political influence in Antarctica will be increasingly threatened.”
