Move to winged keels
NZPA-AAP New York American yacht buyers have the Australian designer, Ben Lexcen, to thank for a trend in the U.S. market — the addition of winged keels to other than 12-metre America’s Cup yachts. Alan Bond, whose yacht Australia II won the America’s Cup from the United States for the first time in 1983, predicts that
all yachts in the 1987 Cup races will have some sort of winged keel, but boat builders in the United States are already adding winged keels to attract mass-mar-ket buyers. After a 30 per cent surge in yacht sales in 1984, in the wake of the thrilling America's Cup races off Newport, Rhode Island, boat sales were up only seven per cent last year.
