Lendl ‘player of year’
NZPA New York Ivan Lendl, the No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world, has been chosen the A.T.P. player of the year by members of the Association of Tennis Professionals. It is the first time Lendl has won the award. Previous winners have been John McEnroe in 1981, 1983 and 1984; Jimmy Connors in 1982; Bjorn Borg from 1976 until 1980, and Arthur Ashe
in 1975. Boris Becker, of West Germany, who in July became the youngest, the first unseeded player and the first German to capture the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, was named the most improved player. His computer ranking jumped from 65th to fifth in the world during the year.
