Pleasing average at Waikato sale

PA Hamilton While selling was not spectacular, as on the opening day, the second day of Wrightson Bloodstock’s twentieth annual Waikato Yearling Sale provided breeders with another pleasing result. The average price of $16,467 was markedly down on the first day, when a 22 per cent increase from the opening day last year ($14,275 to $18,038) was recorded. Yesterday’s average price was, however, still up on last year’s $16,126. There were not the same star lots of opening day on offer and an additional important factor was there were fewer yearlings through the sale ring than on the second day last year. Over all, no one could be displeased with yesterday’s outcome, 200 lots of 238 offered sold for $3,293,500. On the second day last year, 280 lots were offered of which 205 were sold for $3,306,000. For the two days of selling so far, buyers have spent $7,009,500 for 406 lots of 489 offered, the average being $17,264. Perhaps, the most significant factor of this latest Waikato sale is it having provided the most steady auction of its kind ever at Hamilton. There have been far fewer outstanding offerings to fetch the “big money,” thus leaving little for the majority of the remainder. Rather, the sale has provided most breeders, large and small, with a share of the spoils. The quality of the yearlings in the ring have mainly been a credit to their respective vendors, an important factor undoubtedly in the so far successful outcome. The first-day top price of $lOO,OOO for the Musical Phan-tasy-Ina Bahroo colt was not threatened yesterday when the leading price was $BO,OOO for the bay, or brown, filly by Otehi Bay from Tessarc, by . Test Case from Arcola, by Arragon. Offered on account of Sovereign Lodge Stud, Ohau, presented on behalf of Gary McKenzie, the filly was bought by a Sydney trainer, Les Bridge. She is the fourth foal of her dam, herself a winner, and from the family of a former Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes winner, Jetmate, a Singapore Derby winner, Vaaron, and Monastic, which included the weight-for-age Harcourt Stakes at Trentham among his wins. More recently, the Levin mare Kosha has kept this family to the fore. An early highlight was provided when the Adelaide trainer, Len Smith, went to $70,000 to secure a chestnut colt by a V.R.C. and Australian Derby winner, Sovereign Red (by Sir Tristram) from the Blazing Saddles mare, Pretty Magic. From the family of Golden Slipper winner, Dark Eclipse, the colt is from the second

crop of Sovereign Red, a brother to the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups winner Gumer’s Lane and the group one winning filly, Trichelle. The focal branch of auctioneers, Wrightson Bloodstock, outlaid on behalf of clients $60,000 for a bay colt by the boom young sire, Imposing, from the unraced Sir Tristram mare, Tristivor, from an indistinct family. Sir Tristram is already credited as dam-sire of the good filly Wellington Hammer (by Star Way), the promoted winner of the Moonee Valley Stakes and conqueror of Rory’s Jester as a two-year-old. A New South Welshman, V. R. Hayes, went to $55,000 to purchase a chestnut daughter of the Nantallah-line stallion, Aythorpe, and the outstanding Sovereign Edition mare, Sheralee, offered by Auckland’s famed Ra Ora Stud.

Three lots sold for $50,000 — a bay colt by an emerging sire, Icelandic, from Royal Step, a three-quarter sister to Lunar Probe (Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes and stakes placed in the United States); a brown colt by Star Way from the St Puckle (dam-sire Belmura Lad and Al Dwain) mare, Puckle’s Princess; and a grey or roan colt by a second-crop sire, Crested Wave, from Sovereign Bay, a Sovereign Edition halfsister to Tai Mahal (Merson Cooper Stakes). A bay colt by the Austra-lian-based Sir Ivor stallion, Gielgud, from the stakes placed Star Affair (by Star Kingdom) mare, Star Rose, cost D. F. Lamond, of New South Wales, $47,500.

The colt’s grandam, Rosebank II (by Le Filou), is a sister to a Caulfield Cup winner, Big Philou, and a three-quarter sister to the immortal mare, Light Fingers (Melbourne Cup, V.R.C. and A.J.C. Oaks). A beautifully-bred bay or brown colt by the fiery Relicline stallion, Vice Regal, from the imported mare, White Queen, cost Sydney a trainer, Henry Lawton, $47,500. The colt’s dam is by Princely Gift’s son, Sun Prince, and carries close up the blood of Vai de Loir and Herbager. The highest passing yesterday was the $35,000 refused for a brown colt by Telereign from St Helena, the dam of Kosha, offered by Bromar Lodge, Palmerston North.
