El Victory continues Forbury preparation

El Victory continued his preparation for the Anngow Motors Four-Year-Old Championship, which begins at Forbury Park on Saturday week, on a winning note at the Peninsula Owners and Breeders’ trials at Motukarara yesterday.

The winner of the D.B. Waimate Cup two starts back, El Victory had only five rivals pitted against him in the Cl and faster pace and after trailing the pacemaker, Jolani, to the home turn, took the advantage early in the run home and held out a late dab from Travel Warrant to win by half a head. The Lyndhurst-trained El Patron gelding, a last-start third to Talisman over 3200 m at Ashburton on Boxing Day, recorded 3min 30.4 s for the 2600 m yesterday, being timed over his last 800 m in Imin 0.3 s and his closing 400 m in 28.95.

Travel Warrant hinted that he may be on the improve for the D.B. Timaru Cup on Saturday. A proven stayer, the Lordship gelding has failed to fire in three outings this term, but Saeed his closing 400 m in a ttle over 28s yesterday after settling fourth for most of the running. Lady Sovereign, which trailed three back on the inner, was three lengths back third. Catarina (Smooth FellaCedar Myth filly), trained by Graham Pearson drew clear after leading throughout to win the two-year-old pace over 2100 m by five lengths in 2min 51.35, running her last 800 m in Imin I.Bs. The diminutive Jack Smolenski-trained Module Chance (Lord ModuleWilma’s Chance filly) did well to run second after being slow away and being timed over her last mile in 2min 6.7 s and her last 800 m in Imin 1.45.

Roydon Princess (3f Roydon Albatross-Princess Arania) was the most im-

pressive of the maiden winners. After being in the open early, she led briefly, then trailed, and finished best to win in 3min 30.85, the leaders running their last 400 m in 30.15.

Other heat winners were: El Fashion (CO pace, 3min 34.45), Masarko Adios, (CO !>ace, 3min 31.85), Dawn Call CO trot, 3min 46.65) and Troppo (3min 38.15). El Victory’s stablemate in the Paul Newton team, Rolls Hanover (4g Vance Hanover-Black Gem), was the most impressive of nine qualifiers, recording a creditable 3min 27.2 s (2600 m stand) in the first heat.

A son of the Bay Foyle mare, Black Gem, whose dam Tough Choice, was a trotting mare by Tuft, Rolls Hanover settled three back and moved up in the open over the last 1200 m. He ran clear to win impressively by four lengths the leaders running their last 800 m in Imin o.ls and closing 400 m in 29.85.

Sir Harmony (4g Sir Dal-

rae-Key Harmony) recorded 3min 28s for second, with the pacemaker Sidi Trieste, (4m Red John Sidi Rezegh), also gaining her qualifying ticket by returning 3min 28.7 s for third, a further three and a half lengths away.

The richly-bred Roy McKenzie owned and Fred Fletcher trained, Valencia Boy (5g Scottish HanoverValencia, 2min 00.45), a halfbrother to another well-per-formed mare in Lancia (2min 00.45) qualified over 2400 m (stand) in 3tnin 16.45, clearing out to win his heat by five lengths, with the leader running his last 400 m in 31.25.
