Many Trentham hopes in Marton Cup today

special correspondent Wellington While the Marton Cup is a worthy prize in its own right, there seems little doubt that with the $150,000 Wellington Cup just 10 days away, the event becomes an important guide to one of the country’s most testing staying race. Today’s contest is worth $20,000 in total and with Kiwi, Whitole, Milldewe, Fort Cheval, Rose and Thistle, Otakiri Maid and ■ Twelve Guage all from runners and certain as they can be to getting a run in the big one at Trentham, the event becomes doubly important for a number of gallopers in the lower part of the handicap. Cup weights for Trentham were declared earlier in the week and those with 52.5 kg, or more, seem reasonably safe. Chance For Gold, the Otaki galloper which has 52kg today, has the same weight in the cup. Curved Air, one of the favourites for the Auckland Cup and second at Avondale last week, and Final Advance, third in the Ellerslie pace, are gallopers not in today, which may have to look at winning before Saturday week, to make sure of a cup run. Chance For Gold, to be ridden by Garry Phillips, has the advantage of being able to handle most conditions. He was third last time on soft ground which prevailed when Whitole won the Manawatu Cup. The track yesterday was easy, rain having fallen in the Manawatu area in recent times. Whitole and Milldewe, the two principals in the Manawatu Cup finish, will again have the track to their liking and must take beating. Otakiri Maid, a last-start winner at Thames, Fort Cheval, whose Auckland Cup fourth was an excellent effort and Kiwi, dispute a poor effort at Awapuni will also command attention. The Marton Cup is the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg, the Beefeater Handicap, could result in a battle for honours between Nomusa and Mishare. Long trip for Kingston Lane Special correspondent Auckland Kingston Lane was booked to travel last night and through the early hours of this morning to Trentham for the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting. The assignment being set Kingston Lane is the Evergreen Lodge Stakes on the second day next Monday. The rain affected track kept Kingston Lane from showing his best when he ran last time, for second in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. The Takanini colt was an impressive winner in two of his three other starts.
