Mineral hunt off Tonga
From MARY FONUA in Nuku’alofa
A French research ship, the Jean Charcot, has left Nukualofa on a 14-day survey of the seabed on Tonga’s southern territorial waters between 21deg. and 23deg. south-east. . Tonga’s Superintendent of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources, Mr Sione Tongilava, said the French, American, New Zealand and
Tongan scientific team aboard would photograph and map the junction where the Tongan ridge and the Loui ville ridge meet between two and three kilometres below sea level.
The expedition is part of a mineral exploration programme in the Pacific coordinated by the United Nations committee for coordination of joint prospecting for mineral resources in
South Pacific offshore areas.
Drilling for samples of sediment at the junction was expected to follow their findings, he said. An American research ship, the Thomas Washington, from the University of California, is doing seabed research north-east of Niuafo’ou, also known as Tin Can bland, the northernmost island of Tonga.
