Holiday activities The Summer Times programme for secondary school students will soon be’ in full swing with windsurfing lessons at super-cheap rates, orienteering courses, and creative dance workshops. On January 29, there is a full day organised at Akaroa including snorkelling, kayaking, swimming and a bush walk for only $lO. On January 20 and 21 there is a beauty therapy course costing $3.50, and on the evening of January 21, there is a pool disco at Waltham Pool. know. Christchurch had its own island fortress, a trip to Ripapa Island could well be worth while.
The island, which is in Lyttelton Harbour, has tunnels, and defence equipment built underground. Trips to the island are proving so popular that the Lands and Survey Department say “get in early.” Excursions to the island depart from Diamond Harbour Launch Services wharf, Lyttelton, at 11, a.m. on Saturday, January 18, Wednesday, January 22, and Saturday, January 25. Tickets are limited to the first 70 who arrive at the ticket office on the wharf from 9 a.m. on the sailing days. The trip arrives back at Lyttelton at about 2 p.m. For. further information phone 799-760. Japanese cruise . Eleven young New Zealanders left Auckland on Saturday to fly to Tokyo to begin a “once-in-a-lifetime” sea voyage on the Re-
teenth Japanese Youth Goodwill Cruise. They will spend about two weeks in Japan before the cruise starts. It leaves Tokyo on January 24, and they travel via Port Moresby, Sydney, Wellington, Tauranga, Suva, returning to Tokyo on March 14. Paul Anthony Howard, aged 20, is the only South Islander on board. Summer Times There is more Summer Times fun this evening, with some country music, in Bagley Park. On Friday there is mime, theatre, and dance in the Arts Centre Quad, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., while on Sunday there is more country music in Bagley Park during a country fair day. Next Wednesday, a “Rock ’n Roll” concert will be held in Bagley Park, and on Friday, January 24, there is a cabaret in the Arts Centre Quad.
