Man faces total of 90 charges

An Auckland man, whose temporary address was given as a Christchurch motor camp, will plead today, in the District Court, to 90 charges, relating to the alleged theft of cheque forms and credit cards, and the presentation of these to obtain goods, accommodation, and services. The defendant, Anthony Peter Neilson, aged 20, a driver, had appeared in the Court on January 3 on two charges of theft of cheque forms and credit cards, and 27 charges of obtaining goods, accommodation and services totalling $1616, by the use of a credit card.

These charges related to the period between November 27 and December 3. Neilson had then been remanded in custody to yesterday, without plea. At yesterday’s hearing, before Judge Hattaway, Neilson again faced these and a further 61 charges. The new charges comprise theft of a bankcard and two cheques, and theft of a chequebook, both at Auckland, burglary of the caretaker’s residence at Tengaroa College, Auckland, 50 charges of using a

bankcard to obtain a pecuniary advantage, and eight charges of false pretence involving more than $9OO. The latter 61 charges related to between November 13 and December 3, at Auckland and other northern North Island centres, and Christchurch.

Some of the charges allege Neilson committed crimes by the use of a bankcard, on the same day, in Auckland and Christchurch.

His counsel, Ms D. M. Shirtcliff, sought a remand to today, and said Neilson wished them to plead to the charges. She said that “in the light of the number of charges” Neilson would write his plea, and sign it, on each charge sheet before today’s court session. Her application for legal aid for Neilson was granted. THREAT CHARGES On two charges of threatening to kill and one of assault, Heino Jurs, aged 28, a mechanic, was remanded without plea to Sunnyside Hospital for a psychiatric report. He will appear again on January 28. Jurs was charged with threatening to kill his

Edgen, for bail for Jurs was heard in chambers, but was then declined by Judge Hattaway “in the public interest.” ARSON CHARGES Two charges of arson were faced by Raymond Norman Patrick Palermo, aged 21, unemployed. The charges were of wilfully setting fire to a rubbish bin at the Christchurch Technical Institute on November 3, and wilfully setting fire to a shed on a property in Vincent Place on December 16. He was remanded on bail to January 20, wiithout plea, on both charges.
