Nursing passes rise 30 p.c.

Staff at the Christchurch Polytechnic’s School of Nursing are delighted but still a little puzzled at a SO per cent increase in the pass rate of the school’s entrants in the State nursing finals, held late last year. The 1984 pass rate of 60 per cent was lower than those of the preceding three years, and much less than last year’s figure of 90 per cent

The head of the school, Ms Paula Collett said yesterday that none of last year’s 89 students had failed all three papers, and only one had failed two papers. All those who had failed in 1984 and resat the examinations had passed. Ms Collett was unable to account for the improvement She suggested that the 1984 pass rate could have been caused by x ap “aberration” in the way papers were set or something as simple as an uncomfortable examination room.

The 90 per cent pass rate this year was in line with results achieved at other nursing schools, she said.
