Ice ship ‘well equipped’

PA Auckland The chief engineer of the Southern Quest, which sank in the Ross Sea on Sunday morning, has rejected assertions that the ship was unsuited to Antarctic waters. The engineer, Mr Keith Ralph, was not on the final voyage of the former Icelandic trawler, which as she headed for a

rendezvous with the three members of the British South Pole expedition. However, he served on many voyages in the Southern Quest, including one to Antarctica as recently as November, and said that she was well equipped to handle the conditions. “The ship was built to operate in Arctic waters and stiffened to

comply with Lloyds Ice class 3,” he said in Auckland yesterday. “Improvements had also been made to its stability and it had undergone a Lloyds survey in Sydney prior to departure.” Mr Ralph said that all possible precautions were taken to prevent any uncontrollable risks on the ship’s voyage.
