Effort to boost membership
NZPA-Reuter Tokyo Japanese trade unions are printing pictures of pretty nudes alongside serious political articles in their journals in an effort to boost flagging membership numbers. The unions hope that by printing the soft pornography they will attract young workers who have little interest in traditional union activities. “This does not mean we’ve decided not to carry articles intended for the labour movement, such as how to cope with management, how to launch labour struggles,” one union spokesman told a Japanese paper. Less than 30 per cent of Japan’s 58 million workers belong to unions, according to Government figures.
