No compliments for fish-in call

NZPA-AAP Sydney Environmentalists criticised plans for a national fish-in as part of Australia’s 1988 bicentennial celebrations, saying it was cruel. The Australian Recreational Fishing Confederation announced it would hold a year-long fishing party, encouraging all Australians to take up a rod and go fishing in 1988. The Fund for Animals, executive director, Mr Richarddones, said the idea was appalling.

“To have a mass fish-in is like having a mass demonstration of cruelty,” said Mr Jones. “People have to be made aware that fishing is cruel. A mass fish-in isn’t a good way to show we’ve grown up,” he said. Mr Jones said it had been proved fish had the same level of pain reception as cats and dogs. He appealed to potential fishermen to treat their catches humanely, and put them out of their misery as possible. .
