Apartheid in N.Z.

Sir, — I wish to draw attention to hypocrisy on the part of many New Zealanders. While the South African proponents of apartheid are constantly subject to trade embargoes, blockades and diplomatic

sanctions, the New Zealand proponents are supported, sustained and saluted. Maori-inspired and pakehainstituted apartheid takes the form of separate Maori rugby teams, scholarships, loans, parliamentary seats, schools, bursaries and proposed segregated banks, unions and even housing zones. If these are not examples of apartheid — or “separate development” — then what are? Perhaps the energies of Mr J. Minto and his associates would be better directed in this vicinity, rather than towards South Africa. — Yours, etc., A. FERGUSSON. January 8, 1986.
