Budgeriar prices

Sir, — as a budgerigar fancier, the publication in Thursday’s “Press” of the feature article “The crooks who get the bird” culminated for me, five extremely interesting days in the fancy. The Christchurch Budgerigar Association was formed on Sunday, January 5, followed on Monday by the receipt in the mail of the 1985 Budgerigar Society Club show catalogue. It is true that in the United Kingdom some birds are changing hands at extremely high and, if I may say so, ridiculous prices. It is also true that some birds are stolen. The article, however, contained several errors. The budgerigar world show at Esher in Surrey is probably the only show to use a security firm and most shows, including the Budgerigar Society show, are guarded by fanciers, zThere were 358 classes, not 250 as *

stated by Martin Hesp, and very good birds can be purchased in the United Kingdom for as little as $lOO. — Yours, etc., G. R. STRANG, Chairman, Christchurch Budgerigar Association. January 11, 1986.
