Shortage of nurses
Sir,—Today Mr Parker, chief executive of the Canterbury Hospital Board, linked the transfer of nursing education to the polytechnics with the shortage of psychiatric and psychopaedic nurses in Canterbury. This is not the only factor. The nursing staff at Sunnyside still work within antiquated wards designed for custodial care. The high standard of care they give reflects their motivation and commitment to their profession. Staff facilities, e.g. the cafeteria, need upgrading. Increased allocation of resources inservice education would continue refresher courses for returning nurses and the opportunity for further professional development. Actively promoting both job-sharing and parttime positions would encourage experienced nurses to return to the work force. Finally, the board has to market its hospitals more positively if it wishes to attract comprehensive graduates, as well as experienced psychiatric and psychopaedic nurses who wish to return to nursing. — Yours, etc.,
JACKIE WALKER. January 11, 1986.
