Swiss tell diplomat to go

NZPA-AP Bern The Swiss Government yesterday ordered Czechoslovakia to recall a diplomat from its Bern embassy who investigators said had spied for several years on Czech immigrants.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office said it had evidence that the diplomat, whose name and position were not disclosed, was spying for the Czech secret service.

The diplomat used his consular job to call Czechs — some who were naturalised Swiss citizens — to the embassy and question them, the prosecutor’s office said.

He asked them about their flight from Czechoslovakia, their personal lives, family and jobs, and membership in Czech immigrant organisations. The diplomat also hired at least one informer to report on the Czech exile community in Switzerland.
