N.Z. rounds off cycling

New Zealand cyclists rounded off their clean-up of the 1986 Oceania cycling championships at Cooks Gardens yesterday by taking seven of the eight titles at stake on the final day of track racing. The wins boosted the Kiwis’ over all tally of 13 of the available 15 gold medals. New Zealand won the 1

senior sprint, 15,000 m, 40km motor-paced and 4000 m teams’ pursuit, the junior sprint and teams’ pursuit, and the womens’ sprint.

The two titles to escape the host country were the junior 30km points race, and the 8000 m, which both went to Australia. Michael Mcßedmond staged an excellent recovery after losing the first

ride to titleholder, Rosserio Scoleri, to come back with matching times of 11.735, and take the second and third rides for the senior sprint crown. The junior and women’s titles were decided in straight rides with the Aucklanders, Richard Schmidt and Stfe Golder, turning on good sprinting form.
